Our Product

This project occurs in Arizona and the southwest region of the United States. It is the largest expanse of ponderosa pines to prevent potential wildfires. Typically, wood from forest restoration is made into chips or mulch in playgrounds and landscapes. Other times, it is just burned (which produces many harmful chemicals into the atmosphere).

We found a few different sources that produce raw materials (forest thinning waste). Some of these include the National Forest Service (who pioneer the movement through the Four Forest Restoration Initiative), the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management (who help with the Arizona Healthy Forest Initiative), and SRP (who has actually joined forces with the other organizations to assist in forest thinning endeavors).

A company that does similar projects to New Leaf is New Life Forest Restoration. It is a Phoenix-area forest restoration company that uses forest thinning waste to help construction companies stay fully stocked on wood products (for example, wooden trim in a house). They partner with the National Forest Service to obtain these raw materials. Their main goal is to restore forests, and their secondary goal is to product high-value wood products to make sure lumber isn't wasted. They have a restoration facility in Flagstaff, which is the largest high-capacity sawmill factory in Arizona.

To thin forests, Arizona partners work with DFFM foresters and fire managers, professional forestry contractors, inmate forestry crews, and external partners.
